From now on, the José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport of the Americas (AILA) is preparing for the most intense season of the year: Christmas and the end of the year, when it is expected that more than 400 thousand passengers, mostly absent Dominicans, will return to the country.
Meanwhile, through the Directorate General of Customs (DGA), the government announced an increase to US$5,000 in the value of the Christmas bonus in favor of Creoles abroad.
According to Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) estimates, more than 400,000 passengers will enter the country during December. These passengers are residents of the United States and Europe who return to join their families and celebratYear’sstmas and New Year’s Eve.
For this reason, Luis José López, director of communications of Aerodom, confirmed that the projections point to a constant flow of travelers that will increase significantly from the first day of “December this year.
“For that reason, we are projecting that by the end of the year, around 400,050 passengers will be mobilized through the AILA. Most of them will be absent Dominicans, but we also expect tourists on regular and”additional flights,” he said.
He assured that the objective is to guarantee a smooth operation and minimize queues and delays at the airport. “We are working hard to achieve a smooth Christmas season with the efficiency”passengers deserve.”
The return of the Dominican diaspora has become an annual tradition that boosts the local economy and strengthens family ties. Aware of the demand, airlines such as Iberia, Air Europa, JetBlue, and United Airlines have increased the frequency of their flights to meet the growing demand.
For weeks now, the AILA has been making special preparations. The terminal is undergoing a remodeling and expansion process in its service areas, and temporary staff has been hired to ensure a smooth experience for travelers.
In addition, coordination meetings have been held with key agencies in the airport and tourism sector, such as the Directorate General of Customs, the Directorate General of Immigration (DGM), the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC), and the Civil Aviation Board (JAC).
According to the Nuevo airport department, executive management organized the meetings to implement an efficient plan for the high season.
Security representatives, such as the Specialized Airport and Civil Aviation Security Corps (Cesac), the Tourist Police (Politur), and the National Police, also participate.
With the increase in flights and the coordination between the various institutions, the Christmas season is expected to be one of the busiest of the last years.
