Ozama River cleanup goes at good pace: Environment

Santo Domingo.- Environment minister Bautista Rojas Gomez affirmed Sunday that the work to recover and decontaminate the Ozama River advances in several areas and said the government’s efforts are aim to achieve that goal .

He said Environment jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organization (Fao) also works on micro-basin projects such as Guanuma river. “Some civil society sectors are supporting us in the upper basin and have 12 crews working on planting and recovery."

Rojas said however that the Ozama’s recovery and cleanup is a long term project that requires years of work to get good results.

Forest fires

The official also cited the Ministry Environment commitment’s to develop a long-range plan to prevent and control forest fires this year.

He said the plan’s official launch will be on the 20th Valle Nuevo, Constanza (central), where a major blaze charged large forested areas last year.
