Santo Domingo.- The Pedernales International Airport, also known as Cabo Rojo Airport, is on track for completion by late 2025, with its runway already marked and under construction by Spanish firm ACCIONA at a cost of RD$3.961 million. Future development phases will include key infrastructure such as a control tower and passenger terminals. Designed to support the Pro Pedernales tourism initiative, the airport is expected to handle up to one million passengers annually within 17 years, positioning it as the third-busiest airport in the country.
The project is part of a broader public-private effort led by the Pro-Pedernales Trust to promote sustainable tourism and economic growth in the Enriquillo Region, while protecting valuable natural reserves like Bahía de las Águilas and Jaragua National Park.
Airport Director Víctor Pichardo emphasized its potential to attract luxury general aviation, noting the Dominican Republic’s opportunity to become a key Caribbean hub for private air traffic, which generates over US$400 million annually.
