Punta Cana.- During the opening of the XXXVI Asonahores Trade Exhibition at Blue Mall Punta Cana, Vice President Raquel Peña emphasized that tourism will remain central to the Dominican Republic’s economic development. She acknowledged the industry’s significant contributions, noting that it has placed the country on the global map and is a priority for President Luis Abinader.
Peña recognized the government’s need for increased revenue to fund pending social projects, particularly in the Eastern region, where numerous initiatives aim to further develop the tourism sector. She highlighted tourism’s vital role in generating jobs, boosting public revenues, and contributing 19% to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The Vice President also outlined the government’s strategy for sustainable economic growth, placing tourism at its core. She introduced the RD 2036 Meta Plan, which aims to double the real GDP by that year, with ambitious targets of attracting 14 million visitors by 2028, increasing international visitors’ average spending, and raising sector employment by 33%.
The XXXVI Trade Show features innovative proposals designed to foster collaboration among hotels, restaurants, and suppliers, facilitating interaction among national and international participants. Peña stated that events like this will help achieve the goal of attracting 14 million visitors by 2028.
