& #5 Champola

& The Champola (the& spanish name) is a very& Dominican drink made with soursop pulp.

Champola

This is not a drink that you will easily find everywhere, especially not in hotels but can find this fruit in almost every supermarket in the Dominican Republic.

The Champola made with soursop pulp wasn’t too popular before but the drink have become very famous for its medical benefits to fight the cancer. Scientifics says it is as strong as the chemotherapy.

There are two different ways to prepared this drink that I will explain to you in this post:

& You can either do it the old fashion style:

  • Soursop pulp
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Sugar (if you want to but this fruit is very sweet already)
  • Ice Cube (a lot)

Put the soursop pulp into a highball glass, add the evaporated milk and pound a little. Then add the sugar and a lot of ice cubes, stir for like 4 minutes and serve.

or the new style way:

Same recipe just put all the ingredients in a blender and let it blend for a little bit to make it frozen style, serve and enjoy.

#6 Pineapple Guarapo

& Pineapple is a very exotic fruit. This is why we don’t want to waste anything of this tropical fruit.

Pineapple Guarapo

This is drink is a fermented juice made of the skin of the Pineapple. The dominican style way to do it is:

& We peel the pineapple and wash very well, leave it in water in highball glass for two days for two days (do not put into the refrigerator. It will ruined the ferment process. I have seen my ancestors doing it and the way they do it is, they put the juice to ferment in a place where will not get much light, so I would recommend you to do the same)

& After past two days strained the water, add sugar or honey then the ice. Serve and share with your loved one.

This is another drink you won’t find in a hotel in Punta Cana but if you ever come out of the comfort zone of your hotel ask any local and I am sure they will be happy to help you make you one.

Another drink also made of the Pineapple skin is the Pera-Piña. In english is like Pineapple-Pear Juice. Although the name doesn’t make too much sense it is a very good healthy juice.

Pera Pina

This is a funny juice made with rice. YES, RICE!

& This juice was originally made to feed babies.

& The recipe is as follow:

Wash the pineapple skin very well, put it in on a pot, fill with water, rice, sugar and cinnamon stick. Take it to the stove and let it boil but don’t stop stirring so the rice don’t make little balls. After it boils for a while, turn the fire off and let it cold. When it is cold, take out the cinnamon stick and pour it into a blender, let it blend, strain and serve.

Are you still wondering why is it call pear-pineapple juice? The reason is simple, when you cook the rice with the pineapple skin and the cinnamon stick, the rice somehow turns into pear flavor.& YUM!

I bet that if& someone don’t tell you this juice have rice on it you will never guess!

By the way, this kind of& weird juice is VERY healthy (if you don’t add sugar) and it is the perfect juice to drink after working out because of it’s energy benefits.
